Back ground of State:

The erstwhile princely state of Tripura merged with the Indian Union after independence on 1st July,1949. The state is situated in the Northeastern part of India with an area of 10,492 sq. km. and having 856 km long international border with neighbouring country of Bangladesh. Over 60% of the area is classified as forest area and leaving less area about 27% for cultivation. The state has many rain- fed, non-parrenial rivers and streams flowing to the neighbouring Bangladesh. The State has 8- Districts, 23- Sub-divisions, 58- Blocks and 1-Tribal Autonomous District Council. Agartala is the capital city of the State.

The estimated population for 2020 is 40,51,000. As per Census-2011 is 36,73,917, out of which 18,74,376 males and 17,99,541 females. The state ranks 18th position in terms of density of population having 350 persons per sq. km., although, it is the third smallest State in terms of area in the country after Goa and Sikkim. Tripura comes second next to Assam in-respect of population and population density among the North Eastern States of India. The literacy rate of the State is about 87.22% in 2011, which is further rose to 91.10% in 2014.

infrastructure, communication bottleneck, inadequate exploitation of natural resources, low capital formation and per-capita income, poor industry base, high level of poverty and un-employment.

The per capita income of Tripura at current prices has been increased from Rs.47,155/- in 2011-12 to Rs.52,574/- in 2012-13 and Rs.61,815/- in 2013-14, Rs.69,857/- in 2014-15, Rs.84,267/- in 2015-

16 to Rs.91,596/- in 2016-17, and Rs.1,00,444/- in 2017-18 and Rs.1,12,849/- in 2018-19 (1st RE) and Rs.1,23,630/- in 2019-20 (Adv.).

The Per Capita National Income at current prices during the said period rose from Rs.63,462/- in 2011-12 to Rs.70,983/- in 2012-13, Rs.79,118/- in 2013-14, Rs.86,647/- in 2014-15, Rs.94,797/- in 2015-

16, Rs.1,03,870/- in 2016-17, Rs.1,15,293/- in 2017-18 and Rs.1,26,521/- in 2018-19 (1st RE), Rs.1,34,226/- in 2019-20 (PE).

Role & history of Organisation:

 

The Directorate of Economics & Statistics (DES) has been playing a pivotal role in collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of various types of socio-economic data for planning & policy decisions. The DES is also functioning as “Nodal Agency” for the matters relating to economic statistics of the State Government.

The state statistical system was introduced in 1941 by the then Maharaja mainly for meeting the routine requirement of administration and conducting the Population Census, 1941. In the post independence era, the statistical development in the state received an impetus from the growing demand for data inputs for planning and policy decisions both at Central and State Governments level. After liberalization and opening up of the economy during nineties, the requirement of economic statistics have began momentum and demand for economic statistics have increased including from the potential investors, civil society groups, public at large and researchers apart from the Government. The State Government has initially established the Directorate of Statistics & Evaluation in 1978. In 1986, Evaluation wing has been merged with the Directorate of Planning & Co-ordination and this Directorate has been named as Directorate of Statistics.

 

In 1999, the Directorate of Statistics converted and upgraded into the “Directorate of Economics & Statistics” (DES) and brought under the Planning Department for effective professional co-ordinated functioning especially for the planning & policy decisions of the Government.

The Chief Secretary, Tripura has issued a notification in May,2009 specifying the role of the DES-Tripura as “Nodal Agency” for an efficient professional system.

Corporate Objectives:

 

Collection of various economic statistics relating to different socio­economic sectors of the State, compilation and comprehensive analysis of the said data and dissemination of various types of statistics required for planning and policy making both at State and Central levels are the main corporate objective.

Besides, maintenance of close co-ordination with the Central Government in respect of statistical activities is another corporate of object of this Directorate. The Directorate also acts as “Nodal Agency” for the statistical activities of the State Government including maintenance of co-ordination with other line Departments on the matter relating to economic statistics.

 

Existing work pattern:

 

The Rules of Executive Business, Government of Tripura has been entrusted following works to the Directorate of Economics & Statistics under the Planning (Statistics) Department.

  1. State Income – Computation thereof.
  2. Socio-Economic Surveys including NSS.
  3. Community Development & Progress Report.
  4. Census of Employees.
 
  1. Official Statistics.
  2. Price Statistics.
  3. Statistical Training.
  4. Co-ordination of Statistical work of various Department.
  5. Village Directories.
  6. Establishment Budget & Analysis matters.
  7. Census including Economic & Population censuses.
  8. Publication of annual Economic Review.
  9. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 

The above work is being done through the following stages.
